It’s almost the middle of the year, which is a great time for a quick check-in on your mind-body health. Maybe your workload has increased, or your general responsibilities have taken up more of your time. If you’ve found yourself struggling to focus, remember details, or have a general sense of brain fog, I urge you to look at how much movement you are incorporating into your daily routines.
Movement is not only great for your physical health, but it has profound effects on your cognitive health and function. When your body gets moving, your brain releases neurotransmitters and the increased blood flow all helps to improve memory, productivity, and decision-making abilities!
Now, I know that adding one more thing to the daily to-do list can feel daunting. Now, I don’t want you to stress—movement is so much more than going to the gym and trying to complete high-intensity workouts every day. Research shows that walking 6 to 9 miles a week is enough to see the results of oxygen-rich blood pumping to your brain.
Find what sorts of activities work for you. Whether it’s taking a brisk morning walk or finding a hobby such as gardening or golfing, it’s all about getting the body moving. Even mundane activities like window shopping or chores can help get the mind and body connected.
So get up and get out there. Whatever you end up doing, your brain will thank you!
