Dan Kinney didn't set out to become a Physical Therapist. He was studying Architectural Design in college when he went to visit his nephew, who was recovering from a traumatic brain injury after a severe automobile accident. There, he watched a physical therapist work — and what stayed with him wasn't the technique. It was the compassion. The therapist's genuine care for his patient, paired with an obvious passion for the work, moved Dan profoundly.
That moment changed the course of his life. He left architecture behind, pursued physical therapy, and earned his place in Northwestern University's Physical Therapy program. He has been helping people move — and heal — ever since.
Trained on elite athletes. Proven on the toughest cases.
Dan built his craft in sports medicine, working with high school, collegiate, and elite athletes — evaluating injuries, designing return-to-sport rehabilitation, and helping competitors reach peak performance alongside coaches, trainers, and physicians. He went on to serve on an Olympic rehabilitation committee, treating Olympic-caliber athletes as part of multidisciplinary sports-medicine teams.
That foundation taught him how the body performs at its limits — knowledge he now brings to everyday patients who simply want to move without pain again.
The breakthrough that became The Kinney Way
Dan's understanding of the body deepened when he became the patient. Over the years he faced significant physical challenges of his own — including an ACL and meniscus rupture — and lived the frustration of rehabilitation that treated symptoms and isolated body parts while the real problem went untouched. As both clinician and patient, he began asking a different question: what if the pain isn't the problem?
The answer came on a drive home from a course at Pebble Beach. Struggling to walk after an injury, Dan was treated by the instructor with a single, simple mobilization of the pelvis — and within minutes his back pain eased dramatically. On that drive, years of training suddenly connected. He understood that the body works as one integrated chain, and that a restriction in one area quietly overloads another. That insight became The Kinney Way.
He's been the patient in chronic pain. He built the answer he couldn't find.
Core Competencies
One body. Three systems. A FULL-body approach.
Today, Dan's work is defined by The Kinney Way — a full-body approach that evaluates and treats the body as one connected system. Rather than chase the site of pain, he finds the restrictions elsewhere that create compensation and strain, then restores natural movement so the body can heal. Every patient is assessed across three connected systems:
Movement patterns, biomechanical restrictions, posture, and musculoskeletal function.
Nervous-system response, motor control, coordination — and the protective guarding that trauma and injury create, which can limit movement and slow healing.
Decades of training across four disciplines
Dan's approach is unusually integrated — combining hands-on physical therapy with the root-cause tools of functional medicine, nutrition, and mindset coaching.

Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy.
Because Northwestern did not offer a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at the time of his graduation, Dan holds a bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy and professionally uses the credential PT.
Advanced study in nutrition and lifestyle-medicine principles.
Behavioral change, mindset development, and human-performance psychology.
Root-cause analysis and systems-based healthcare.
The patients who finally found answers
The success of The Kinney Way naturally drew Dan toward the people the symptom-chasing model leaves behind:
If you've tried everything and nothing has lasted, you're exactly who he built this for.
Care that puts you back in control
Dan believes healing isn't something done to you — it's something you take part in. A core piece of every visit is helping you truly understand your body and your condition. That understanding shifts your focus away from the pain, out of a victim mindset, and toward the things you can do for yourself. Educated, empowered patients get better outcomes — and get their confidence back.
